9. Thompson's Point 0.3
miles
This extension of the Fore River Trail
is a fascinating juxtaposition between
Portland 's past and present. The path
meets the Fore River Trail at the location
of the turning basin for the historic Cumberland
and Oxford Canal . Not much remains of
the hustle and bustle of the 19 th century;
with only subtle overgrown land-forms indicating
old wharfs and roads.
Thompson's Point is now the center of
much of the light-industry, as well as
the train and bus station for the city.
Walking between warehouses, parking lots
and the tidal inlets, one is presented
with interesting, if not pristine, views.
The trail is still under construction,
currently ending at the tip of the point,
overlooking the Portland Jetport, I-295,
and the Fore River Estuary.
Trail Access:
From Congress Street access
off of Hobart Street trailhead (across
from Osgood Street ), or Thompson's Point
Road , behind the train and bus stations.
METRO Bus Route: 5
ICONS: Hiking/walking, Bicycling, snowshoeing,
