Volunteer Profiles

‘Jump in. Just do it.'

The 10 th annual Trail to Ale 10K is coming up Sunday, Sept. 20, and with a thousand runners expected to participate, Portland Trails needs a large group of volunteers to keep things running smoothly.

Long-time volunteer (or as he calls himself, “serial committer”) Bruce Hyman of Portland and his family will be pitching in at the 10K and he wants you to join them.

Portland Trails: How long have you been volunteering for Portland Trails?

Bruce Hyman: I would says at least since 1994. I found out about Portland Trails through my work in city planning. I was reviewing funding applications from the organization when I decided to start volunteering. Been regretting it ever since—just kidding! It's been a great way to get our kids involved in community activities and give back.

PT: How many children do you have?

BH: We have two daughters, 15 and 16. Volunteering has always been a family affair with us. They both went to Lyseth School and had the good fortune of having good teachers engaged in trail building.

PT: At how many 10Ks has your family volunteered?

BH: Probably all except the last two, so I guess that would be the first seven or so. My wife, daughters, and I would help at the water station at the water treatment plant by Tukey's Bridge.

PT: Was it fun?

BH: Oh, exceptional fun. Just a good two-hour way to support an event that really helps the organization. It certainly can be a little hectic as runners come through the water stop in one direction and eventually the other on the way back. But it's good for the organization to see all that growth in participants.

PT: Are you hoping to reclaim your water stop this year?

BH: We'd be looking to, but I heard Tom Farmer and his family have been at the spot the last couple of years. I may have to Indian leg wrestle him for the spot. Or maybe my daughter and I could just team up to help them.

PT: Do you like the people you've met while volunteering for Portland Trails?

BH: Absolutely. It's been pretty amazing the circle of friends I've made while volunteering over the last 15 years. Just a great organization.

PT: What do you have to say to people on the fence about volunteering for Portland Trails?

BH: Jump in. Just do it. You won't regret it. There's something for everyone to do.
