You see them all the time, dogs and their people, out for a run.

They seem to run for the pure joy of it, which is, after all, what dogs do. But what if a dog’s person wants a little glory to go with the joy? What if the person wants to show off his dog’s running skill in a road race?

Then all they need to do is head over to the Bayside 5K-9 race in Portland on Sunday. Advertised as “Portland’s most PUPular race,” it’s one of the very few places where human runners and dog runners can compete side by side.

“I only know of one other race like this,” said Tyler Brown, 29, of South Portland. “This is great for us because Harlow loves to run. I just ran a half-marathon and he was my training partner.”
