Sebago to the Sea

This trail is an unfinished route. Portland Trails is working with our partners to help make the Sebago to the Sea vision a reality.

What is the Sebago to the Sea Trail?

Sebago to the Sea is a vision of a continuous trail from Sebago Lake to Casco Bay, connecting Standish, Windham, Gorham, Westbrook, Portland, and Falmouth. In 2007, members of the Sebago to the Sea Coalition worked with towns, nonprofits, land trusts, and other partners in each town to create the 28-mile route and acquire rights of way when needed. The goal of this trail is to provide residents and visitors with biking, hiking, walking, and commuting opportunities in Greater Portland.

What’s the status of this trail?

The current Sebago to the Sea trail route is not easily navigable from end to end. The Westbrook and Portland sections in particular are incomplete and/or hard to follow, and over five miles of this part of the route is on roads and sidewalks.

After conversations with our trail partners, we have decided to pause directing people to this trail. Portland Trails began removing Sebago to the Sea signage from our trails in August 2026.

However, all the trail sections in the Portland Trails network remain open! You can explore all of these trails – and more – by visiting our digital trail map. We also encourage trail users to visit the trail sections in Standish, Gorham, Westbrook, and Windham. What’s next?

We’re enthusiastic about making this vision of a trail connecting the lake to the sea a true reality! We’re working with our partners to create and advocate for a new route following the Mountain Division rail line all the way to Portland that will be more direct, functional, and pleasant for trail users. This will be a multi-year effort and will require fundraising, but with your support we can make it happen! More information – and action steps – to come.

Can I see the old route?

Yes, but please note that this map is outdated and includes sections that are unsanctioned and unsigned. Portland Trails will create and share a proposed new trail route in 2027.
