Stroudwater River Trail

Trail Description

This beautiful, densely wooded trail follows the winding banks of the Stroudwater River from outer Congress St. to Clark Brook Trail and Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook. There are benches at scenic outlooks and a number of bridges crossing streams and soggy areas. When the river freezes in the winter, it’s a lovely spot to go ice skating!

In 2026, a large metal bridge was installed over the river (map) connecting the trail to the Stroudwater Preserve neighborhood. Portland Trails plans to build trails that will connect this bridge with the Fore River Sanctuary. Stay tuned for updates!

The middle section of the trail between Blueberry Rd. and Hutchins Dr. is one of Portland’s few remaining deer yards. That section is closed in the winter to provide deer valuable habitat during the winter months.

The western section of the trail from Blueberry Rd. to Spring St. is rugged with many hills and weak cell reception.

Note: Bow hunting is allowed in the woods adjacent to the trail in Westbrook during hunting season.

Accessibility Information

From the River’s Edge Drive trailhead off outer Congress St., the gravel trail descends down a steep grade via granite stairs to reach the Stroudwater River. The trail then continues west along the river at a flat slope, with boardwalks traversing wet areas. The terrain gradually becomes more hilly as you travel toward Westbrook. There is weak cell reception between Blueberry Rd. and Spring St.
